About 1750 he was appointed Cantor and Rabbi in 1772. He carried out both these functions until 1802. He was also known as David Jacobs Stibbe Sjoesjan, and as David Sjoesjan. He took over the Stibbe Apothecary, from Meindert Stibbe on 13 January 1738. Meindert , a protestant, died around the 1st of January 1738 without any descendants or heirs. David was employed by Meindert Stibbe at the apothecary. David was subsequently , and used the name Stibbe. The name probably came from a cough powder they sold with Antimony Chloride (Stibium Muriaticum) as an ingredient. Subsequent research revealed that the name Stibbe originates in Kreis Krone in Prussia (now part of Poland) where many Stibbe names occur together with derivatives of that name, such as Stbe, Stubbe,Steibert, etc. There was also a town Stibbe. Meindert Stibbe, or his ancestors may have come from this area. David Jacob Stibbe was the Rabbi in Zwolle. Was Mohel (circumcisor=besnijder) for the entire Westland., bron: Stibbe-familie
